Car donations to a charity of choice

Donating a car to charity is one way of making a difference in the lives of those that need it more than you or I. Its deciding which charity is the right one that will help in the way you would like.

Believe me there are many charities to choose from.

I have come across many sites and found Charity Navigator to help you in your quest, in finding the charity of choice. It is important that the charity you support is all that you believe it to be. That the charity is legitimate, and registered.

Good Luck!

A Very Special Person

"I dont have time", "I'm too busy", are only a couple, but common responses you hear people say when they are approached to volunteer their time for a charity.

Working for charitable organisations takes a unique person. Volunteering your time to help someone else other than yourself is a very special quality only found in a rare few.

Volunteers, work towards making a difference in the lives of those that need it most. Most of us take life for granted, however working in a charitable organisation can not only be extremely rewarding but brings life back to reality in no other way that I have found.

You could be that very special person that makes a difference.

What Is It I Can Donate?

Charity organisations of late have been working overtime. From an earthquake, to a hurricane or fires the charity organisations are there to assist. When watching those graphic events, you know you want to help. You probably have even asked yourself that questions most of us do, "What is that I can donate?", "What is it those poor people need most?"

Did you know that most Charity organisations accept cars. Even cars that haven’t been running for years, so as long the cars value does not offset the cost of towing them. Some charities except boats, trucks and even trailers.

All these different forms of transport are tax deductible when donating, so long as the gift you are making is made to a registered charity organisation.

Charity Organisations

Food donations, Blood Donors, building materials, car donations or money, whether it has been a celebrity or simply the next door neighbor all these people have given generously. However, it is always important to remember that when you are fundraising or donating you become knowledgable of the laws involved.

More than a few people do take advantage of the these situations and therefore strict regulations of how and what can be donated have been put into place.

Charity dosen't only begin at home

Families, work friends or even in individuals have come up with ways of raising funds or giving items for those in need.

After Hurricane Rita the out pouring of celebrities was instant. Just being there was a show of support for the residents of this Natural disaster. Bringing much needed food, clean water, or clothing gave these remarkable survivors hope that someone out there had witnessed what happenend, they were not alone.

Volunteers, a resource that is much sort after by Charity Organisations.
So dont just think about what you can do help just DO IT.
Become a volunteer, it is very rewarding in so many different ways.

Car Donations - What you need to know Pt. 3

Be aware that the IRS is making an exception for those taxpayers whose donated car is given or sold to a needy person for well below the fair market value. So as long it can be proven that the needy person requires the vehicle for transportation.

Although these very strict rules have been put in place the AJCA, there is still an opportunity to have a fair deduction whilst helping those that require it.

Car Donations - What you need to know Pt. 2

There are restricted exclusions that have been provided to a donor in which a they may claim a fairmarket value deduction. If the non-profit organissation uses the vehicle as a delivery vehicle or perhaps to transport people to destinations of purpose they may claim the full fair market value.

A donor may also claim for fairmarket value if the vehicle has been majorly repaired this does not include having the car detailed or resprayed to another color or same for that matter. This means a motor reconstruction or something of that nature that increases the value of the car.

Hardworking Volunteers

Charity organisations across America are filled with hardworking volunteers with the only goal in mind, is to provide a service to the community in which needs them most.

However a dilemma in the past has hindered the hard work that these selfless people provide. In the case of when a car is donated to charity, a taxpayer has been able to deduct the fairmarket value of their vehicle and claim that amount as a tax deduction even if the car was in dis-repair. The charity would in most cases be left with a car that was better taken to the junkyard.

For example, if the donated car’s fair market value was $3000.00, that would be what the donor would have to put on the IRS claim form for the deduction. It wouldnt matter if the car was not running. However, the charity organization would still need to rid itself of the donated vehicle and in most cases, would get a small amount, not even enough to pay for its disposal.

An Aftershock in Pakistan

Car Donations - What you need to know Pt. 1

The American Jobs Creation Act (AJCA) has been thoroughly modified so that the amount of the deduction taxpayers can claim has to be proved.

No longer is the fair market value the only proof required, for a car that is donated. There are stringent rules to follow that have been set in place by the IRS. Rules that finally make it a level playing field for charities receiving the car donation and the donor donating. Now what is going to happen is that the price of the vehicle when sold by the non-profit organisation will be the amount used for the claim.

The taxpayer must get a written acknowledgement from the organisation in order to claim the deduction.
